Copyright ©NADIS 2017 Benefits of treating the individual cow: 'Oestrus not observed' ('ONO', missed heat, 'not seen bulling') The routine veterinary visit is an important part of the management of fertility. A key part of the routine visit is the examination of cows which have not been seen in heat, but have been calved long enough that they are eligible to be inseminated. Some of these cows may have abnormal ovaries (cystic structures or ovaries that are small and inactive) or have an infection of the uterus several weeks after calving (endometritis or 'whites'). However, a large proportion of cows presented as 'not seen bulling' are likely to have apparently normal reproductive tracts and a corpus luteum (CL) on at least one ovary. The presence of a CL indicates that the cow has probably been in heat and ovulated within the last 5-17 days. If cows which have cycled are not treated then they are likely to carry on cycling, coming in heat roughly every 21 days, until they get pregnant. However, it is likely to be at least seven to ten days before they come into heat again, and, as the previous heat behaviour was missed, it is quite probable that subsequent heats will be missed too.

Estimation of Economic Values for Fertility, Stillbirth and Milk Production Traits in Iranian Holstein Dairy Cows

The objective of present study was to derive the economic values for number of inseminations to conception, calving interval, milk yield and stillbirth, using economic data of 10 Iranian Holstein herds. The economic values were derived by using the profit function methods and differentiating a profit equation with respect to the traits of interest. The cow fertility costs herd amortization or r...

Veterinary dairy herd fertility service provision in seasonal and non-seasonal dairy industries - a comparison

The decline in dairy herd fertility internationally has highlighted the limited impact of traditional veterinary approaches to bovine fertility management. Three questionnaire surveys were conducted at buiatrics conferences attended by veterinary practitioners on veterinary dairy herd fertility services (HFS) in countries with a seasonal (Ireland, 47 respondents) and non-seasonal breeding model...

Investigation the Efficiency Ceftiofur Hydrochloride in Prevention of Uterine Postpartum Infections and Improvement the Fertility Parameters in Holstein Dairy Cows Affected by Retained Fetal Membrane and Dystocia

Objective: Ceftiofur, a third-generation cephalosporin, is used as a usual antimicrobial drug in veterinary medicine. Positive efficiency of ceftiofur for treatment of retained fetal membrane (RFM) and acute puerperal metritis has been previously reported. Thus, this study was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of ceftiofur hydrochloride (CH) in prevention of uterine postpart...

Transition Cow Management to Reduce Metabolic Diseases and Improve Reproductive Management

The dairy industry in North America has changed dramatically with a trend in direction of larger herds and higher production per cow, which seems to be associated with a decrease in fertility, especially a decrease in conception rates and extension of calving intervals (Butler, 2000; Lucy, 2001; Stevenson, 2001) This decline in fertility of lactating dairy cows is observed not only in North Ame...
